Flamingos Chase Another World Cup Qualification As Benin Visit Ikenne

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will begin their final quest for a place at this year’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup when they host neighbours Benin Republic in the first leg of the final qualifying round on Saturday in Ikenne, Ogun State, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

With only two matches separating them from another appearance on the global stage, the Flamingos enter the tie carrying both the expectations that come with their impressive pedigree and the confidence gained from a dominant qualifying campaign so far.

The seven-time African qualifiers advanced to the final round in emphatic fashion after dismantling Guinea 11-0 on aggregate. Across both legs, Nigeria demonstrated superiority in attack and defence, creating scoring opportunities with consistency while denying their opponents any sustained attacking rhythm.

The comprehensive victory highlighted the squad’s attacking depth, defensive organisation and growing tactical maturity under head coach Akeem Busari.

Rather than easing off after the second-round success, the Nigeria Football Federation and the coaching crew maintained the team’s momentum through an intensive training programme and a series of competitive friendly matches designed to sharpen the squad ahead of the decisive encounter with Benin.

The thorough preparations reflect the standards long associated with the Flamingos, one of Africa’s most successful youth women’s teams. Over the years, Nigeria has established itself as a consistent force in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, producing talented players capable of competing with the continent’s best and making a mark on the world stage.

That tradition was underlined in 2022 when the Flamingos secured a historic bronze medal at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India—the country’s best-ever finish at the tournament.

Captain Harmony Chidi has been one of the standout performers in the current campaign. The prolific forward scored five goals in the two victories over Guinea and has combined clinical finishing with strong leadership to inspire the team.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi has also impressed, contributing three goals in the previous round while continuing to showcase her creativity, intelligent movement and ability to unlock defences during the team’s recent friendly matches.

Queen Joseph is another player expected to play a key role. Her pace, direct approach and eye for goal have made her one of Nigeria’s most dangerous attacking threats, and she will be expected to trouble the Benin defence.

Benin Republic, however, will arrive in Ikenne determined to upset the hosts. They earned their place in the final qualifying round with an impressive 5-1 aggregate victory over Sierra Leone, a result that underlines their growing competitiveness.

While Nigeria enter the contest as favourites, knockout football has often shown that reputation alone is not enough. Discipline, concentration and clinical finishing will be crucial over the two legs as both teams battle for a place at the World Cup.

With qualification now firmly within reach, the Flamingos will be aiming to take a significant step towards Morocco by securing a commanding first-leg advantage before the return fixture.
