Flying Eagles Fall to Burkina Faso, Shift Focus to WAFU B U20 Semi-Finals

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U20 Championship despite suffering a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Burkina Faso's Young Stallions in their final Group B match on Sunday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The loss brought an end to Nigeria's perfect start to the tournament but was not enough to deny the seven-time African champions a place in the knockout stage, having already accumulated enough points from their opening two victories.

Nigeria began their campaign in impressive fashion with a commanding 4-2 victory over regional rivals Ghana before producing another dominant display to defeat Togo 3-0. Those back-to-back wins secured six points and placed the Flying Eagles in a strong position heading into their final group fixture.

Burkina Faso, however, produced an inspired first-half performance to claim all three points and hand Nigeria their first defeat of the competition.

The Young Stallions opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Alassana Bagayogo rose highest to meet a well-delivered corner kick, powering a header beyond the Nigerian goalkeeper to give Burkina Faso the lead.

The advantage was doubled 13 minutes later through Mohamed Zongo, who produced one of the standout moments of the tournament with a spectacular free-kick from approximately 30 yards. The midfielder's powerful effort sailed into the top corner, leaving the Nigerian goalkeeper with no chance and giving Burkina Faso a comfortable 2-0 cushion before halftime.

The Flying Eagles returned after the interval with greater urgency and enjoyed more possession as they searched for a route back into the contest. However, Burkina Faso remained disciplined defensively, limiting Nigeria to few clear-cut opportunities and preserving their clean sheet until the final whistle.

Despite the setback, Nigeria's qualification for the semi-finals underscores an otherwise encouraging group-stage campaign in which the team scored seven goals in three matches. The defeat also provides a timely reminder of the challenges that lie ahead as the competition enters its decisive phase.

The Flying Eagles will now shift their focus to the semi-finals, where they will aim to rediscover the attacking form that saw them overcome Ghana and Togo, while tightening up defensively as they continue their quest to successfully defend the WAFU B U20 Championship title.

Sunday's result also highlighted the competitive nature of the tournament, with Burkina Faso boosting their own ambitions through a composed and clinical display that could make them one of the strongest contenders for the title.
