Flying Eagles Return To Nigeria, Await CAF Decision on U-20 AFCON Qualification

Nigeria’s U-20 men’s national team, the Flying Eagles, have returned to the country and are now awaiting a decision from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on their qualification status for the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Flying Eagles arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at about 7:00 p.m aboard Air Cote D'ivoire on Tuesday, following their campaign at the 2026 West African Football Union (WAFU) B U-20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire.

Nigeria finished as runners-up after suffering a heavy 1-4 defeat to Burkina Faso in Sunday’s final in Yamoussoukro.

The result denied the seven-time African champions a third successive WAFU B title, having won the regional championship in 2022 and 2024. Nigeria had also entered this year’s competition as defending champions. The tournament served as the regional qualifying competition for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Flying Eagles’ return to Abuja comes against the backdrop of uncertainty over the allocation of qualification slots for the continental championship.

Ghana factor

Ghana has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, meaning the Black Satellites will qualify automatically as hosts. CAF’s decision to award Ghana the tournament has consequently created an unusual situation in the WAFU B qualification race.

The regional championship was originally structured around qualification through the WAFU B competition with two slots. However, Ghana’s automatic qualification as host means that one of the countries competing in the regional qualifiers has already secured a place at the continental finals.

The two finalists of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship were Burkina Faso and Nigeria. Burkina Faso secured the regional title and, under the normal qualification arrangement, earned the WAFU B ticket.

Nigeria are therefore hoping CAF will consider allocating an additional slot to WAFU B, which would allow the Flying Eagles to join Burkina Faso at the 2027 continental championship.

The Nigerian team’s hopes are partly encouraged by CAF’s handling of the 2025 U-20 AFCON, which featured 13 teams rather than the more traditional 12-team field. CAF's official draw documents confirmed the participation of 13 nations at the Egypt 2025 tournament.

However, it remains unclear whether CAF will adopt a similar approach for the 2027 tournament or whether the confederation will maintain the existing allocation framework.

Waiting for CAF

The final decision rests with CAF, and there are hopes that Nigeria will receive an additional qualification place.

For the Flying Eagles, the situation represents a second opportunity to reach the continental stage after falling short in the WAFU B final.

Nigeria remain the most successful nation in the history of the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, with seven titles, and have traditionally been one of Africa’s strongest forces at the age-grade level.

The 2027 tournament will be hosted by Ghana, with the Ghana Football Association confirming that CAF has officially awarded the country the hosting rights. Ghana last hosted the U-20 AFCON in 1999.

The Flying Eagles will now have to wait for CAF to determine whether WAFU B will be granted an additional place and whether Nigeria, as runners-up, will benefit from such an allocation.

Until CAF makes its pronouncement, Burkina Faso remain the only WAFU B side certain to have secured qualification through the regional competition, while Nigeria's continental hopes still remain alive.
