Former Super Eagles Duo Feature As Real Madrid Legends Defeat Inter Legends 2-1
By Our Reporter
Two former Super Eagles stars, Victor Obinna Nsofor and Joel Obi, featured for Inter Milan Legends as they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid Legends in the 13th edition of the Corazón Classic Match at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The annual charity fixture, organised by the Real Madrid Foundation, took place on Saturday and brought together some of the most celebrated former players from both European clubs. This year's event was held under the theme, “A Match with the Soul of Childhood,” with proceeds earmarked for social and sports development initiatives benefiting children worldwide.
Inter Legends appeared poised for victory after taking a first-half lead, but Real Madrid Legends staged an impressive second-half comeback to secure the win in front of their home supporters.
The contest remained closely fought throughout much of the opening half before Inter broke the deadlock in the 41st minute. Former Brazil international Hernanes converted on the rebound after Real Madrid goalkeeper Koke Contreras saved his initial penalty attempt.
Inter's star-studded lineup included club icons Javier Zanetti, Maicon, Lúcio, Esteban Cambiasso, Rodrigo Palacio, Giampaolo Pazzini and Goran Pandev.
Real Madrid Legends responded strongly after the interval and eventually found an equaliser in the 69th minute when former Portugal defender Pepe rose highest to head home and make it 1-1.
The hosts completed the turnaround six minutes later through David Barral. The former Spanish striker capitalised on a delivery into the penalty area, directing the ball beyond goalkeeper Francesco Toldo to hand Real Madrid a 2-1 advantage.
Despite mounting pressure from the Italian side in the closing stages, Real Madrid Legends held firm to seal victory in the prestigious charity encounter.
Obinna and Joel Obi were introduced in the second half and made positive contributions as Inter sought a way back into the game, but their efforts were ultimately not enough to prevent defeat.
