Former Super Eagles Star Joins APC, Plans House of Reps Bid

Former Super Eagles defender Shehu Abdullahi is set to enter Nigeria’s political arena, with plans to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives ahead of the 2027 general elections, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Abdullahi, 33, enjoyed a distinguished football career representing Nigeria across multiple levels, featuring for the U-17, U-20, U-23, and senior national teams. He earned 37 caps for the Super Eagles between 2014 and 2019. At club level, he had stints in Europe with sides such as Anorthosis Famagusta FC, Bursaspor, AC Omonia, and Levski Sofia before returning to his boyhood club, Kano Pillars, in 2024.

Following the completion of the domestic season, Abdullahi transitioned into public service after being appointed Special Assistant on Youth Mobilisation to the Sokoto State Commissioner for Sports.

His political ambitions have now taken centre stage, as he aligns with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for his electoral bid.

Confirming the development, his former Kano Pillars teammate Ahmed Garba stated that Abdullahi has stepped away from professional football to focus entirely on politics. According to him, the former defender has returned to Sokoto State and is preparing to contest for the Sokoto North/Sokoto South Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

If successful in the 2027 elections, Abdullahi would join a select group of Nigerian footballers who have made a successful transition from professional sports to elective political office.
