GSS Elekohia Wins Second Edition of New WW Whyte Schools Football Tournament in Port Harcourt

Government Secondary School (GSS) Elekohia has emerged champions of the second edition of the New WW Whyte Secondary Schools Football Competition in Port Harcourt, defeating Government Secondary School Rebisi 4–2 in an exciting final.

Elekohia’s victory was inspired by standout winger Destiny Akodi, who delivered a brilliant hat-trick to seal the win for his team.

Speaking at the grand finale, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and sponsor of the tournament, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, expressed satisfaction that the initiative continues to provide a platform for young talents across the region to thrive through sports.

Dr. Ogbuku, who received awards from Great Minds Grassroot Development and Sports Initiative—the organisers of the tournament alongside concerned youth leaders, thanked them for the recognition. He reaffirmed the NDDC’s commitment to supporting youth development and grooming future stars through sports-driven programmes.

Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Engr. Promise Alabere, noted that this year’s edition showed marked improvement from the inaugural tournament. He revealed that both the winners and runners-up will proceed to represent the state in a zonal championship featuring schools from the nine Niger Delta states.

Board of Trustees member and Media Director, William Barieye, commended the quality of football displayed by the participants. He added that Rivers State, known for producing several national-calibre players, will continue to benefit from the New WW Whyte tournament as it expands in the coming years.

The ceremony concluded with the presentation of medals and individual awards, including Best Goalkeeper, Most Valuable Player, and Highest Goal Scorer.

GSS Elekohia received a ₦2.5 million cash prize, while GSS Rebisi earned ₦1.75 million for finishing second. Pabod Model Secondary School, Port Harcourt, claimed third place and a ₦1 million prize.
