Glasgow 2026 Set to Deliver First-Ever Indoor Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony

Organisers of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games have officially announced ticket details for the highly anticipated Opening Ceremony, with registration for the public ballot opening on Monday, May 18.

The ceremony, scheduled for July 23, 2026, will take place at the iconic OVO Hydro and is expected to launch what organisers describe as the biggest sporting event in the United Kingdom in 2026.

In a historic first for the Commonwealth Games, the Opening Ceremony will be staged entirely indoors, transforming the Hydro arena into an immersive entertainment venue for athletes, fans and performers from across the Commonwealth.

The ceremony, presented by Longines will officially begin 10 days of sporting competition and welcome athletes from 74 nations and territories participating in the Games.

Organisers revealed that the production will feature a local cast of more than 600 performers alongside headline entertainment acts, with the show designed to celebrate the culture, creativity and global influence of Glasgow, Scotland and the wider Commonwealth.

Due to the expected high demand for tickets, Glasgow 2026 organisers have introduced a dedicated ticket draw system aimed at ensuring fair public access.

Fans interested in attending the ceremony must register online between May 18 and May 26 to enter the ballot. Successful applicants will be selected randomly and notified on June 1 before ticket sales officially begin on June 2.

Ticket prices for adults range from £45 to £195 across four categories, while concession tickets will also be available.

Chair of Glasgow 2026, George Black, said the ceremony would represent a defining moment for the city and the Commonwealth movement.

“The Opening Ceremony marks the moment we welcome athletes from across the Commonwealth to Glasgow. Gathered in the Hydro, we will share a story of how this incredible city has contributed to the world,” he said.

Chief Marketing and Ceremonies Officer Louisa Mahon described the show as a bold and energetic production unlike any previous Commonwealth Games ceremony.

“For the first time in Commonwealth Games history, we are taking the entire show indoors and transforming the Hydro into a fast-paced, immersive experience packed with energy, surprises and spectacle,” Mahon said.

She added that audiences should expect major live performances, large-scale visual effects and the arrival of all 74 ceremonial Batons from participating nations and territories.

Executive Producer for Ceremonies, Tom Davies, also hinted at several surprises planned for the event while promising a world-class production delivered by an experienced international creative team.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games are expected to attract thousands of athletes and visitors to Scotland, while also providing a major economic and tourism boost for the host city.
