Grassrunners FC and Abakaliki FC produced two of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Ogunjobi Gold Cup on Monday, defeating Lagos rivals Inter Lagos and Ikorodu City respectively on MatchDay 4 of the pre-season tournament at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Grassrunners FC wasted little time asserting their dominance against Inter Lagos, taking control of the encounter within the opening half-hour.

Ajibola Emmanuel opened the scoring in the 28th minute after capitalising on a defensive error before Ubi Johnson doubled the advantage with a well-taken effort.

The victory lifted Grassrunners FC to the top of the standings with 10 points and strengthened their position as one of the leading contenders for the pre-season title.

Ikorodu City also suffered a setback after failing to make their possession count against Abakaliki FC.

Despite enjoying 53 per cent of the possession, the Lagos-based side struggled to convert their dominance into goals and were punished by a clinical Abakaliki outfit.

Moses Amanekwu broke the deadlock four minutes after the half-hour mark, giving Abakaliki FC a valuable lead.

Ikorodu City pushed for an equaliser but were unable to find a way through, before another defensive lapse in the 88th minute effectively settled the contest.

A poor clearance fell kindly to Chimaobi Metumareobi, who produced a composed half-volley from inside the box to double Abakaliki’s advantage.

The victory moved Abakaliki FC to second place with nine points, keeping them firmly in contention at the top of the table.

Elsewhere, Doma United recorded their first victory of the tournament with an impressive 3-1 win over newly promoted NNL side Dokkal Khairu FC of Ile-Ife.

The Savannah Tigers made a fast start, with Haruna Abubakar putting them ahead in the seventh minute. Bitrius Philemon extended the advantage in the 38th minute before Usman Nasiba completed the scoring for Doma United in the 85th minute.

Dokkal Khairu FC managed a consolation goal but could not prevent Doma United from securing their first three points of the competition.

Earlier, Stormers SC and Sunshine Stars played out a 1-1 draw in the opening MatchDay 4 fixture, with both goals coming in the first half.

The tournament takes a break on Tuesday, with MatchDay 5 action scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
