Henry Nwosu Burial Plans Finalised As Imo Govt Pledges Full Honours

By Our Reporter

Former Nigerian international and football icon Henry Nwosu will be laid to rest on May 16, 2026, at his family home in Naze, Owerri, Imo State, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The burial date was confirmed by Monday Kalu, a former player and member of the burial organising committee, who clarified that earlier reports suggesting a different date should be disregarded.

Speaking to Sports247, Kalu disclosed that activities leading up to the burial will include a night of tribute scheduled for May 11 at Saint Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos. He added that the official obituary is expected to be published before the end of April.

“The burial date is Saturday, May 16, 2026, not May 12. We also have a night of tribute tentatively fixed for May 11,” Kalu said.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Government has pledged to play a prominent role in the funeral arrangements. The Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Evaristus Onyeocha, confirmed that the state will accord Nwosu full honours in recognition of his contributions to Nigerian football.

Onyeocha described the late midfielder, a member of Nigeria’s victorious squad at the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, as a proud son of Imo State whose legacy deserves a befitting send-off.

He noted that the government has formally acknowledged the burial plans and will work closely with the family to ensure a state burial.

“We will not leave the responsibility solely to the family. It will be a state burial, and the government will participate fully,” Onyeocha said.
