Cape Verde continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup debut by becoming the smallest nation ever to reach the tournament's knockout stage after securing a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia on Friday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has been central to Cape Verde's historic campaign. The 40-year-old produced another assured performance, making several key saves to preserve a clean sheet against Saudi Arabia.

He denied Mohamed Kanno with a sharp stop in first-half stoppage time before producing further saves from Mohammed Abu al-Shamat in the 66th minute and Abdullah al-Hamdan deep into added time to frustrate the Saudi attack.

"We are small, but we have big hearts and we are fighters," said Vozinha, who spent last season with Portuguese second-division side Chaves.

"There is a lot of quality in our national team. Maybe many people don't believe Cape Verdean players are good enough, but we came here to show that we can compete at the highest level and that our players belong on the biggest stage."

Head coach Bubista praised his players for proving that determination can overcome expectation.

"The team was very eager to show this to the whole world," he said after the match while draped in Cape Verde's national flag.

"We are proud to have reached this stage. We have shown that we are a small country, but we fight for everything we want to achieve."

On the eve of the match, Bubista had declared that "everyone is entitled to dream and nothing is impossible." His team turned those words into reality with a disciplined and courageous tournament campaign that has captured the imagination of football fans around the world.

Cape Verde also created opportunities of their own against Saudi Arabia. Kevin Pina fired narrowly over the crossbar early in the second half, Laros Duarte was denied by goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais, and Nuno da Costa sent a late effort wide in the closing moments.

Saudi Arabia exited the tournament with two points after failing to register a victory in the group stage.

Coach Georgios Donis admitted his side fell short in the decisive encounter.

"We were very poor in creating chances, controlling the game and building attacking moves," Donis said. "You cannot win matches playing like that.
