Super Falcons will face South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in a crucial World Cup play-off after their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title defence came to an agonising end on Sunday night, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Falcons suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to perennial rivals Cameroon in a fiercely contested quarter-final at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, bringing their bid for a 10th continental title to an end.

Cameroon took the lead in the 19th minute with a well-struck free kick, punishing Nigeria against the run of play.

Nigeria responded strongly and dominated large periods of the game, creating several opportunities to level the score before half-time. Gift Monday and Jennifer Echegini both came close, but Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Michaely, produced important saves to preserve her side’s advantage.

Super Falcons coach Justin Madugu attempted to change the course of the match with a series of substitutions. Uchenna Kanu replaced Rinsola Babajide in the 38th minute, while Toni Payne, Esther Okoronkwo and Asisat Oshoala were introduced after the break.

The changes added fresh attacking impetus as Nigeria increased the pressure on Cameroon. The Falcons dominated possession, camped in the Indomitable Lionesses’ half and continued to threaten deep into stoppage time.

However, Cameroon’s defence held firm to secure a place in the semi-finals and send the defending champions out of the tournament.

Despite their quarter-final exit, Nigeria’s World Cup hopes are not over.

The Super Falcons will now face South Africa in a play-off, with the winner advancing to the inter-confederation play-off for a chance to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria must therefore defeat Banyana Banyana to keep their hopes of reaching the global tournament alive.

The decisive play-off against South Africa is now the Falcons’ immediate route back into contention for a place at the 2027 World Cup finals in Brazil.
