Former Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has dismissed reports suggesting he was forced to retire from international football, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Ekong, who recently announced his unexpected retirement from the Nigerian national team, described the rumours circulating in some quarters of the media as “completely false.”
His decision to step away from the Super Eagles had shocked many fans around the world. Reacting via his social media handle on Friday evening, the 30-year-old defender made it clear that the choice was entirely his.
“Not true! My own choice/decision and on my own terms. No one ever asked/tried to force me out. If anything, the opposite when I shared my decision,” he wrote.
Ekong, a key figure in the team for nearly a decade, expressed his continued support for the Super Eagles as they prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.
“I wish the team all the best and support them together with all Nigerians for the upcoming AFCON to go all the way,” he added.
His statement brings clarity to the situation as fans continue to react to the end of an era for one of Nigeria’s most dependable defenders.
