Infantino Criticises ‘Unacceptable Scenes’ In Senegal–Morocco AFCON Final

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has strongly criticised the conduct of the Senegalese national team during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 final, describing scenes during the match as damaging to the spirit of the game, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

In an unusually forthright public intervention, Infantino condemned the actions of Senegal’s players and technical staff after they staged a 14-minute walk-off protest in response to a controversial late penalty awarded to hosts Morocco during second-half stoppage time.

The Teranga Lions went on to secure their second continental title with a 1–0 extra-time victory in Rabat, but the FIFA president said the disruption overshadowed what should have been a celebration of African football.

Writing on Instagram following the match at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Infantino expressed his disappointment at what he described as “unacceptable scenes” both on and off the pitch.

“Unfortunately, we also witnessed unacceptable scenes on the field and in the stands. We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members,” Infantino wrote.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport.”

He also stressed the importance of respecting match officials and indicated that disciplinary action could follow.

“We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play,” he added. “I expect that the relevant disciplinary bodies at CAF will take the appropriate measures.”

Alongside his criticism of Senegal, Infantino praised the host nation, thanking King Mohammed VI and describing Morocco as “exceptional hosts” of the tournament.

That endorsement has generated controversy across African football circles, with critics arguing that the tournament was marred by several contentious incidents involving the hosts. Among the flashpoints cited were viral footage showing Moroccan players and ball boys attempting to interfere with Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy ahead of a penalty, as well as security concerns raised by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF).

Prior to the final, the FSF lodged formal complaints alleging inadequate security arrangements and poor accommodation for its delegation, claims which organisers denied.

Senegal ultimately claimed victory through Pape Gueye’s extra-time goal, after Morocco’s Brahim Diaz failed to convert the disputed penalty with an attempted Panenka. However, the fallout from the final has shifted attention away from the result itself and toward potential disciplinary consequences.

With FIFA’s comments adding weight to CAF’s ongoing investigation, sanctions are now expected against Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw and several players involved in the protest, as African football authorities seek to restore focus on discipline and respect for the game.
