International Duty Row Lands DR Congo In FIFA Complaint

West Ham United F.C. have lodged a formal complaint with FIFA over the delayed return of defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka following international duty with Democratic Republic of the Congo, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 27-year-old right-back was absent as West Ham exited the FA Cup after a penalty shootout defeat to Leeds United F.C. on Sunday. His absence came shortly after he played a key role in DR Congo’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup—the country’s first appearance at the tournament since 1974.

DR Congo secured qualification with a 1-0 victory over Jamaica in an intercontinental playoff held in Mexico, before returning to Kinshasa for national celebrations hosted by President Felix Tshisekedi.

However, sources familiar with the situation indicate that West Ham had not authorised Wan-Bissaka to remain in DR Congo for the post-qualification festivities. The club had reportedly arranged travel for the defender’s immediate return to London, but he did not board the scheduled flight.

Wan-Bissaka, who joined West Ham from Manchester United F.C. in August 2024 on a long-term deal, switched his international allegiance from England to DR Congo and has since earned nine caps.

The defender has been a key figure for West Ham this season, registering three assists in 22 Premier League appearances. He was also named the club’s Player of the Year for the 2024–25 campaign and remains first-choice under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

In his absence, Kyle Walker-Peters filled in at right-back against Leeds. Wan-Bissaka is expected to return in time for Friday’s crucial league fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C..

West Ham currently sit in the relegation zone, just one point behind Tottenham Hotspur F.C. in 17th place. A positive result in their upcoming match could prove pivotal in their battle to avoid relegation.
