Jessica Oji Claims Commonwealth Games Silver on Team Nigeria Debut

By BSN Sports

Jessica Oji delivered a standout performance for Team Nigeria, winning the silver medal in the women's shot put at the Commonwealth Games with a personal best throw of 17.87 metres, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 19-year-old Nigerian-American, competing in her first Commonwealth Games for Nigeria, produced a composed display to finish second in a highly competitive final, further enhancing Team Nigeria's impressive medal haul in Glasgow.

Oji finished behind Canada's Sarah Mitton, who secured the gold medal with a championship-winning throw of 19.88m. Jamaica's Lloydricia Cameron also recorded a best effort of 17.87m but settled for bronze after Oji claimed silver on countback.

The medal marks another significant milestone in Oji's remarkable breakthrough year. Born and raised in the United States, she switched her international allegiance to Nigeria earlier this year and has quickly established herself among the country's leading field-event athletes.

The University of Pennsylvania thrower already holds the Nigerian national record in the women's shot put and has enjoyed an outstanding collegiate season in the United States, producing a series of record-breaking performances that announced her as one of Africa's brightest young throwing talents.

Her podium finish in Glasgow reinforces that promise. Despite facing an experienced field of international competitors, Oji displayed maturity and composure beyond her years to secure a medal in her first appearance at the Commonwealth Games.

The silver medal also strengthens Team Nigeria's impressive campaign, with the country continuing to collect medals across para powerlifting, weightlifting, athletics and para athletics.

Team Nigeria Medal Table

- 🥇 Gold: 7

- 🥈 Silver: 5

- 🥉 Bronze: 2

Total: 14 medals

For Oji, however, the achievement represents more than a place on the podium. Her silver medal signals the emergence of another exciting talent for Nigerian athletics. At just 19 years old, she has made an immediate impact on one of the biggest stages in Commonwealth sport, with every indication that many more international podium finishes lie ahead.
