Jessica Oji Revels In Historic World U20 Gold After Emotional Season

Nigeria’s newly crowned World U20 shot put champion, Jessica Oji, has described her historic triumph as the culmination of an emotional and demanding season, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Oji became Nigeria’s first-ever World U20 field event champion, adding another major achievement to a breakthrough year that had already seen her claim a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Reflecting on her journey, Oji admitted that the experience of competing at her first international competition and winning Commonwealth silver was overwhelming.

“It’s been an emotional roller coaster coming into my first international competition and getting the silver medal at the Commonwealth. I was already gobsmacked,” Oji said.

Despite entering the World U20 Championships after a long and physically demanding season, the Nigerian youngster set high expectations for herself and was determined to finish the campaign on a high.

“So coming into U20s, I have high goals for this meet. I’ve been looking forward to this all year,” she added.

Oji acknowledged that she was not at her physical best when she arrived for the competition but was delighted to overcome the challenge and secure the world title.

The historic victory caps a remarkable year for the young Nigerian, who believes the pressure and experiences she has handled throughout the season will strengthen her confidence as she prepares for the upcoming collegiate season.

Her World U20 success further underlines Oji’s emergence as one of Nigeria’s most promising young field-event athletes.
