Nigeria’s D’Tigress star Ezinne Kalu has added another remarkable milestone to her illustrious basketball career after her high school retired her jersey in recognition of her outstanding achievements, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Born to a Nigerian father and an American mother, Kalu made history during her high school days, becoming the first woman in the school’s history to score more than 2,000 points.
Her impact on the programme was so significant that the school honoured her legacy by retiring her jersey.
Kalu’s influence, however, has extended far beyond the high school court.
The talented guard went on to become a key figure for Nigeria’s D’Tigress, helping the team make its mark on the international stage at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and the Olympic Games, while also playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s dominance at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
Kalu is one of only two players remaining from Nigeria’s historic 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup squad, which made history as the first African team to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
Her leadership, experience and commitment have made her an important figure in the continued rise of Nigerian women’s basketball.
Beyond her achievements on the court, Kalu’s connection to her Nigerian roots has made her an inspiration to a new generation of African girls aspiring to pursue careers in basketball.
From having her high school jersey retired to representing Nigeria on some of the biggest stages in world basketball, Kalu’s journey continues to stand as a testament to perseverance, excellence and pride in one’s heritage.
