MKO Abiola Stadium Closed Indefinitely Following Police Security Alert
By Niyi Busari
The management of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, has announced the immediate closure of the stadium premises following what it described as a credible security threat communicated by the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
According to an official security notice issued on Monday night, all entrances to the stadium were ordered shut effective August 3, 2026, with the restriction remaining in place until further directives are issued by the Police Headquarters.
The directive affects all individuals currently using the stadium facilities, including athletes, football teams, fitness enthusiasts, and other members of the public who had planned to access the pitch or other sections of the complex.
Stadium management said no person would be permitted to enter the facility once the closure takes effect. Those already within the stadium were advised to leave the premises immediately in a calm and orderly manner.
Security personnel have been deployed around the facility to enforce the closure and maintain public safety. Members of the public have also been urged to avoid gathering around the stadium gates and to comply fully with instructions from security agencies.
While authorities confirmed that the decision was based on a credible security alert, no further details regarding the nature of the threat have been disclosed. Officials said the restriction is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives and property while security agencies assess the situation.
The management assured the public that further information will be released as soon as updates are received from the Police Headquarters. Regular users of the stadium are advised to monitor official communication channels for announcements regarding the reopening of the facility.
The Moshood Abiola National Stadium is one of Nigeria's premier sports complexes, hosting national sporting events, football matches, recreational activities, and fitness programmes. Any prolonged closure could temporarily affect scheduled sporting and training activities.
Authorities have appealed for public understanding, cooperation, and vigilance as security measures remain in force. This version is suitable for publication by newspapers, online news platforms, or broadcast media.
