Morocco Football Federation Sacks Regragui
Sampson Adedeji
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has officially relieved Atlas Lions head coach Walid Regragui of his duties, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The decision comes amid mounting pressure following Morocco’s failure to secure the Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil.
Expectations were high for the Atlas Lions, but the team fell short of lifting the continental trophy, intensifying scrutiny around the Franco-Moroccan tactician.
Despite the disappointment, Regragui leaves behind a significant legacy in Moroccan football.
He guided the national team to a historic semi-final finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African nation to reach the last four of the global showpiece.
At club level, the 48-year-old enjoyed notable success, leading Wydad Athletic Club to CAF Champions League glory before taking charge of the national team.
Under his stewardship, Morocco also finished as runners-up at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further cementing his impact on the team’s recent resurgence.
From Casablanca to Doha, Regragui’s tenure inspired a generation and elevated Moroccan football to unprecedented heights.
The federation is expected to announce his replacement in the coming days as preparations begin for upcoming international competitions.
