Morocco Pull Back Form CAF Initiatives As Lekjaa Sets Tough New AFCON Conditions

Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa has announced a significant shift in Morocco’s relationship with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), declaring the withdrawal of support for certain continental initiatives while outlining stricter conditions for future collaboration, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Lekjaa stated that Morocco will no longer endorse or participate in what he described as non-essential CAF-led initiatives, including hosting some continental conferences or taking on what he termed a “reserve role” in administrative arrangements.

However, he made it clear that Morocco’s engagement with African football remains intact on key competitive matters, particularly regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). 

According to him, Morocco will continue to support bids to host the tournament, but such backing will now be conditional on strict compliance with CAF’s technical, infrastructural, and organisational standards.

The decision signals a recalibration of Morocco’s influence within African football governance, with Lekjaa emphasizing accountability, professionalism, and adherence to established requirements as the basis for future cooperation.

CAF has yet to issue an official response to the announcement, but the development is expected to spark discussions across the African football hierarchy given Morocco’s growing role in continental and global football affairs.
