N5 Billion Prize Money Awaits NFF If Super Eagles Clinch 2025 CHAN Title

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a record-breaking total prize fund of $10.4 M for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), marking a significant financial milestone for the tournament and underscoring CAF’s commitment to elevating the profile of African football, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

For the first time in the tournament’s history, the champions will receive $3.5 million (equivalent of ₦5,352,165,000.00)

 representing a 75% increase from the $2 million awarded in the previous edition. The runners-up will take home $1.2 million, while the third and fourth-placed teams will earn $700,000 and $600,000 respectively.

In a move aimed at incentivising broader participation, CAF has also allocated rewards for lower-ranking teams. Quarter-finalists will each receive $450,000, and group-stage finishers will earn between $200,000 and $300,000, depending on their final position and group structure.

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe emphasized that the increased prize money is part of a wider strategy to invest in domestic football and showcase homegrown talent on the continental stage.

“This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe said in a statement.

He added that CHAN plays a “key role” in CAF’s broader mission to enhance the appeal of African football to fans, sponsors, and international broadcasters.

The 2024 edition of CHAN, officially titled CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024, marks the first time the tournament will be jointly hosted by three countries. Set to take place from August 2 to 30, 2025, the event will feature 19 teams, including defending champions Senegal, past winners Morocco and DR Congo, and regional heavyweights Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Zambia.

For Nigeria, just as the women's national team, Super Falcons won the 2024 WAFCON, the Nigeria Football Federation could earn over Five Billion naira prize money if the Super Eagles B team go all the way to win the title.

For the home based Super Eagles, this edition carries added significance. The Super Eagles are returning to the tournament after missing the previous edition, having secured qualification with a 3–1 aggregate win over long-time rivals Ghana. Under the leadership of Coach Eric Chelle, Nigeria will aim to build on their best finish to date—a second-place showing in 2018—and pursue their first-ever CHAN title.

The expanded prize structure is expected to inject fresh energy into the tournament and provide critical support for national programs built around domestic league talent.
