NFF Fact-Finding Report: Amun Reveals Why He Stepped Down

Former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) General Secretary, Ambassador Fanny Amun, has explained why he resigned as chairman of the federation’s fact-finding committee shortly after submitting its report, BSNSports.com.ng can exclusively report.

Speaking to BSN Sports, Amun said his decision was driven by a desire to ensure that the committee’s findings were submitted without external influence or interference.

“I didn’t want anyone to influence the report before I submitted it to the NFF. That was why I submitted it and resigned,” Amun said.

He explained that although he had informed members of the committee that the assignment could take up to two weeks, he was determined to complete the work much earlier to avoid any attempt to influence the outcome.

“I told everyone, including members of the committee, that it would take two weeks, even though I knew it would not take me more than one week. This was because I didn’t want anyone to influence the fact-finding committee’s decisions.

“So, I decided to submit the report and resign.”

Amun also said he has never been one to remain in a position longer than necessary once he has fulfilled the responsibility entrusted to him.

“Moreover, I am not someone who will spend more than enough time in a position,” he added.

The NFF inaugurated the committee on August 17, 2026, following a string of disappointing results by Nigeria’s national teams, particularly the Super Falcons.

The Falcons, the defending African champions and 10-time winners of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, suffered a quarter-final elimination before losing 2-1 to South Africa in the playoff for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The failure means Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup for the first time since the competition was introduced in 1991.

However, the committee’s mandate extends beyond the Super Falcons. NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau charged it with investigating the direct and remote causes of the recent poor performances of Nigeria’s national teams in international competitions.

The committee was chaired by Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, with former Nigeria U-20 coach Ladan Bosso, former Super Falcons star Desire Oparanozie, former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju and Dr Alex Mana serving as members. Nasiru Jibril was appointed secretary.

The members were selected from different areas of Nigerian football, bringing experience in administration, coaching, playing and officiating. 

The committee was tasked with investigating the reasons behind Nigeria’s recent national-team setbacks and examining the circumstances surrounding the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

It was also mandated to engage individuals connected to the issues, receive memoranda and views from interested members of the public, and make recommendations aimed at addressing the challenges affecting Nigerian football.

At its inauguration, Gusau gave the committee two weeks to complete its assignment and submit its report.

Amun had pledged that the committee would approach the task diligently and objectively, with the intention of establishing the facts and making recommendations in the interest of Nigerian football.

The report could potentially address several areas, including technical preparation, coaching, player selection, administration, logistics, federation structures, grassroots development and accountability.

The NFF has, however, not publicly released a detailed list of specific issues or individuals the committee was expected to investigate.
