NFF Scramble For Replacement After Cape Verde Withdrawal From Nigeria Friendlies

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team, the Super Falcons, have suffered a setback in their preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following the withdrawal of Cape Verde from a planned double-header of international friendlies, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Super Falcons were scheduled to face Cape Verde in two matches at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on April 15 and April 18, 2026. The fixtures were arranged as part of Nigeria’s build-up to the continental tournament, which is set to take place in Morocco in July.

However, indications from both camps confirm that the matches will no longer go ahead after Cape Verde pulled out of the engagements. The development has also affected the logistics and scheduling of invited Nigerian players, with delays reported in their arrival to camp.

The friendlies were expected to provide an important opportunity for the Super Falcons’ technical crew to assess the squad, build cohesion, and integrate new players alongside established stars ahead of the tournament.

With the cancellation, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is now expected to explore alternative options to secure replacement fixtures, as the team seeks adequate preparation before its opening game at WAFCON 2026.

Nigeria remains the most successful side in the history of the competition, and maintaining a competitive edge through quality preparatory matches is seen as crucial to their campaign.
