As preparations intensify for the kickoff of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, the league board has issued a strong warning to players against engaging in any form of betting, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The resolution followed extensive discussions during the recent Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Abuja, where the growing trend of players involved in betting was a major topic.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the NPFL emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards betting among players and disclosed that strict measures have been put in place to punish offenders.
“The league will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law on any player found guilty of engaging in betting activities,” the statement read.
Player involvement in betting has become increasingly rampant globally, drawing concern from football authorities.
FIFA, the world governing body, has consistently sanctioned players found guilty of such infractions, and the NPFL has now reaffirmed its commitment to following suit.
The 2025/2026 NPFL season is scheduled to begin on August 22, 2025.
Defending champions Remo Stars will be looking to retain their crown after finishing ahead of Rivers United and Abia Warriors last season.
