Ndidi Urges Super Eagles To Stay Ready As FIFA Reviews Congo Eligibility Case

Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi says Nigeria’s national team remains focused on its preparations despite uncertainty surrounding the country’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Nigeria’s chances of reaching the tournament—set to be hosted across United States, Canada and Mexico—suffered a setback last November when the Super Eagles lost 4–3 on penalties to DR Congo national football team in the African playoff final.

The situation took another turn when the Nigeria Football Federation submitted a petition to FIFA, questioning the eligibility of some Congolese players and alleging an improper change of nationality.

The complaint has been under review since December 2025, but no verdict has been delivered with just 20 days remaining before the intercontinental playoff tournament in Mexico.

Despite the uncertainty, Ndidi said the players are determined to remain focused on their responsibilities on the pitch.

 “To be honest, I don’t really focus on things I cannot control. We just concentrate on our football and prepare ourselves the best way possible,” Ndidi told Punch.

He added that while the team hopes for clarity, the players trust the football authorities to manage the situation.

 “Of course, everyone wants clarity, but we trust the Nigeria Football Federation and the authorities to handle everything properly.

As players, our job is to stay ready, stay united, and keep working hard. Nigerian fans always expect the best from us, and we respect that. Whatever the outcome, we will continue to give everything for the country and make Nigeria proud.”

The intercontinental playoffs are scheduled to take place between March 26 and March 31 in Guadalajara and Monterrey, with six nations competing for the final two qualification spots at the expanded World Cup.

DR Congo are currently set to face the winner of the playoff between Jamaica national football team and New Caledonia national football team. However, a ruling in Nigeria’s favour could lead to adjustments to the fixture list.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Football Federation has arranged a four-nation tournament for the Super Eagles during the March international window. Nigeria are expected to face Iran national football team on March 27 before taking on Jordan national football team on March 31 in Amman.

However, there remains uncertainty over whether the matches will proceed as scheduled due to rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
