Nigeria Bags Nine Gold, Five Silver Medals At 2026 International Championship

Nigeria's Para Badminton team delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 Uganda Para Badminton International Championship, winning a total of 14 medals—nine gold and five silver—at the tournament held from 7 to 12 July, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The impressive medal haul further underlines Nigeria's growing reputation as one of Africa's leading nations in para badminton.

Lyka Brown was one of the standout performers, claiming gold in the WH1 Women's Singles before teaming up with Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift to win another gold medal in the WH1 & WH2 Women's Doubles.

Chukwuemeka also captured gold in the WH2 Women's Singles, extending Nigeria's dominance in the wheelchair women's events.

In the men's wheelchair competition, Emmanuel Ifeanacho Ohaeri secured gold in the WH2 Men's Singles and partnered Lyka Brown to win the WH1 & WH2 Mixed Doubles title. Ohaeri also teamed up with Ekeoma Samuel to earn silver in the WH1 & WH2 Men's Doubles.

Ekeoma added another silver medal in the WH1 Men's Singles and, alongside Chukwuemeka Ijeoma Gift, claimed silver in the WH1 & WH2 Mixed Doubles.

Nigeria also excelled in the standing categories. Obinna Precious Nwosu won gold in the SL3 Men's Singles, while Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka claimed silver in the same event.

Nnanna Jeremiah Chigozie emerged champion in the SL4 Men's Singles before combining with Eze Sunday Chukwuebuka to capture gold in the SL3 & SU5 Men's Doubles.

In the SU5 category, Eneojo Elijah Agada won gold in the singles event and later partnered Obinna Precious Nwosu to secure silver in the SL3–SU5 Men's Doubles.

Reacting to the team's performance, President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Francis Orbih, praised the athletes for their commitment and success, describing the result as another milestone for para badminton in the country.

"The para badminton athletes have once again shown that the country can depend on them to win medals and make Nigeria proud," Orbih said.

"This current board will continue to support the para athletes and ensure they receive all the necessary backing.

"Our target is the Paralympic Games. We want to qualify as many athletes as possible with the aim of making a huge impact, building on the achievement of Eniola Bolaji."

Orbih also acknowledged the support of the Abia State Government, Bayelsa State Government and the Police College Badminton Club, Lagos, for their contributions to the team's participation.

"I want to thank the Abia State Government for sponsoring six players, while the Bayelsa State Government and Police College Badminton Club, Lagos, each sponsored one athlete.

"The federation remains open to partnering with these organisations and many others as we continue to develop para badminton in Nigeria."
