Nigeria National League One of the Toughest Competitions - Says World Cup Winner

Head coach Emmanuel Amuneke has described the Nigeria National League (NNL) as one of the most demanding competitions in the country following Heartland FC’s 3–1 victory over Smart City FC on Saturday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Emmanuel Amunike led Nigeria to win the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup few years after winning the Africa Nations Cup title as a player.

Speaking after the match at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Amuneke acknowledged the intensity of the league despite his team’s impressive comeback performance.

“This league is very tough,” Amuneke said shortly after the final whistle, noting that teams must maintain a high level of focus throughout the campaign.

The encounter began on a surprising note for the hosts, as Smart City took the lead just two minutes into the game through Erikan Francis, placing immediate pressure on Heartland in front of their home supporters.

Heartland, however, responded strongly to the early setback. Jonathan Osondu levelled the score in the 21st minute with a well-taken strike that reignited the home crowd.

The Owerri-based side continued to press forward and completed the turnaround just before the halftime break when Gafar Ojo scored in the 45th minute to give Heartland a 2–1 lead.

Amuneke’s men maintained their attacking momentum in the second half and eventually secured the win in the 70th minute, when Ali Sunday added a third goal to put the result beyond doubt.

The victory represents an important boost for Heartland in the ongoing NNL season as the club seeks to strengthen its standing in the league table.

Amuneke praised his players for their determination and composure after conceding early, emphasizing that consistency will be crucial as the challenging season progresses.
