Super Falcons and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana will meet in Casablanca on Thursday in a crucial 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff, with both sides fighting to keep their qualification hopes alive after disappointing exits from the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The two African heavyweights were eliminated at the quarter-final stage, missing out on automatic qualification for the expanded 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

South Africa suffered a 2-1 defeat to hosts Morocco, while Nigeria were edged 1-0 by Cameroon. With the four WAFCON semi-finalists securing automatic World Cup qualification, the quarter-final defeats left both teams facing a longer route to Brazil.

What is at stake?

Thursday’s winner will advance to the preliminary round of the inter-confederation playoffs, where six teams will compete for the remaining World Cup places.

The preliminary stage will determine which teams progress to the final phase, where they will be joined by four sides that receive byes. The six teams in the final phase will then compete in single-elimination matches, with three ultimately earning places at the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
