Nigerian Defender Part of Lincoln City’s Historic Promotion After 65 Years

Nigerian defender Deji Elerewe played a supporting role as Lincoln City F.C. secured promotion to the English Championship for the first time in 65 years, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Lincoln confirmed their place in the 2026/2027 Championship season following a dramatic 2–1 victory over Reading F.C. on Easter Monday at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

Although a draw would have been sufficient to seal promotion, Jack Moylan’s stoppage-time winner ensured the Imps marked the occasion in emphatic fashion.

The result capped an outstanding League One campaign in which Lincoln City established a commanding 19-point lead over third-placed Bradford City A.F.C., confirming their elevation with games to spare.

Elerewe featured in the decisive encounter, coming on as a substitute for Dom Jefferies with 23 minutes remaining. Since joining Lincoln City from Charlton Athletic F.C. during the January transfer window, the 22-year-old has been gradually integrated into the squad.

He has made five substitute appearances, accumulating 39 minutes of playing time, as he continues to adapt to his new environment under a long-term contract that runs until 2029, with an option for an additional year.

Prior to his move, Elerewe was a regular starter for Bromley F.C., where he made 23 appearances in all competitions and scored four goals, underlining his effectiveness at both ends of the pitch.

Born in Croydon, London, Elerewe remains eligible to represent Nigeria internationally and has previously indicated his openness to a future call-up to the Super Eagles.

Lincoln City’s promotion marks a historic milestone for the club, while also representing a significant moment in the early stages of Elerewe’s career as he continues his development in English football.
