Obasa Summer Games: 20 Boys’, 8 Girls’ Teams Begin Agege Football Fiesta

Twenty-eight grassroots football teams have begun the 2026 edition of the Obasa Summer Games U16, with the tournament kicking off on August 14 in Agege, Lagos, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The three-week competition features 20 boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams, with 52 matches scheduled to take place across venues including Ideal Primary School, Tabon-Tabon, and Orile-Agege and Oniwaya High School in Agege.

Held under the theme, “Rising Stars. Growing Together. One Future,” the tournament has a total prize purse of ₦2 million, which will be shared among winners in the boys’ and girls’ categories.

Speaking to journalists at the official opening ceremony, the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, said the competition was designed to create opportunities for young footballers at the grassroots level, regardless of their current level of ability.

“The essence of the Obasa Summer Games U16 is to create opportunities for more young emerging talents, regardless of skills, to enjoy themselves, hence expanding the number of grassroots teams,” Obasa said.

He noted that participation had increased significantly from the previous edition, which featured 16 boys’ teams and four girls’ teams.

“This year, we have increased the number to 20 and eight, respectively,” he said.

Obasa said the tournament remained firmly rooted in grassroots football, noting that matches would be played on sand-surface pitches.

“There’s a lot of talent. Interestingly, one of the players picked from one of our communities is currently with the national U17, the Golden Eaglets, camp. That shows that we are doing something right with the Obasa Summer Games,” he said.

He also disclosed plans to establish a community-based football club, Agege City FC, which he said is expected to take shape towards the end of the year.

According to him, the emergence of clubs such as Ikorodu City, Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos and Eko United has demonstrated the growing opportunities for footballers in Lagos, adding that Agege City FC would provide another platform for talents discovered through the Obasa Summer Games.

“For us at Agege Local Government, sports development is the gateway for a lot of talents to express themselves and make life and career decisions,” Obasa said.

The 2026 Obasa Summer Games U16 is expected to provide a competitive platform for young footballers while strengthening grassroots participation and talent development in Agege.
