Former France international Patrick Vieira is in Senegal as negotiations over his appointment as the new head coach of the Teranga Lions continue, despite an agreement reportedly being reached, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Vieira is expected to take charge of the Senegal national team, but several details remain unresolved, meaning the deal has not yet been formally signed.
The delay comes around ten days after reports first emerged that an agreement had been reached between Vieira and the Senegalese authorities.
According to reports, there is currently no indication of an internal change of direction, with the delay understood to be part of the Senegalese officials’ cautious approach to coaching appointments.
A similar situation reportedly occurred when Senegal delayed discussions over the renewal of Aliou Cissé’s successor, Pape Thiaw, between the end of the Africa Cup of Nations and the third round of the World Cup qualifying campaign.
However, Vieira is not expected to face such a lengthy wait, with time already becoming a major concern ahead of the next international window.
Senegal are scheduled to play international matches between September 21 and October 6, leaving the former Arsenal and Manchester City midfielder with limited time to prepare his squad.
Vieira will need to begin discussions with players, assess the national team setup and finalize his technical staff. The composition of his backroom team and the conditions attached to his appointment are among the outstanding issues.
The former midfielder is understood to want guarantees before formally committing to the challenge, as Senegal prepare for a new chapter under his leadership.
For now, Vieira remains in Senegal as both parties work towards completing the agreement.
