Player Ratings: How Super Eagles Fared in 0-1 Loss to Senegal

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B began their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign on a disappointing note, falling 0-1 to defending champions Senegal in a tightly contested Group D encounter at the Amaan Stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Senegal snatched all three points with their only shot on target late in the game. A momentary lapse in concentration allowed the Teranga Lions to capitalize on a swift attacking move, drawing goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha off his line and slotting home what turned out to be the match-winner with 15 minutes left.

The match lived up to its billing as a heavyweight clash between two West African giants, with intensity, pace, and physicality on display throughout. Nigeria largely dominated possession and territory but lacked the cutting edge in the final third, as the Senegalese defense stood firm under pressure.

Goalkeeper Lawal Mustapha made a crucial interception from a cross in the 21st minute and remained alert until the decisive moment of Senegal’s breakthrough. The Lions of Teranga also came close from a well-taken free-kick in the 33rd minute.

Despite the Super Eagles' industrious performance, they struggled to break down Senegal’s resolute backline. Defenders Leonard Ngenge and captain Junior Nduka provided stability at the back, while midfielders Tochukwu Michael and Olamilekan Adedayo worked tirelessly in transition.

Senegal nearly doubled their lead in the final minute with a fluid team move, but Nduka and Ngenge were well-positioned to clear the danger.

The defeat leaves Nigeria at the bottom of Group D with no points, while Congo and Sudan—who played out a 1-1 draw earlier—each sit on one point. The Super Eagles’ next fixture is a must-win clash against Sudan at the same venue next Tuesday.
