Redemption or Exit: Nigeria Face Crucial 2024 CHAN Test Against Sudan

Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles will be aiming for redemption when they face Sudan in their second Group D match at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Zanzibar on Tuesday, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The 2018 silver medalists currently sit bottom of the group after a narrow 1-0 defeat to defending champions Senegal in their opening fixture. With just two matches left in the group phase, the tie against 2014 bronze medalists Sudan is now a must-win if Nigeria hopes to keep their qualification hopes alive ahead of their final group match against Congo.

The stakes are high—not just for progression, but also for a share of the historic $10.4 million prize money being offered by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for this year’s championship. For the first time in CHAN history, the tournament winners will receive a record $3.5 million, marking a 75% increase from the $2 million awarded in the previous edition.

The runners-up will earn $1.2 million, while the third- and fourth-placed teams will take home $700,000 and $600,000, respectively. Quarter-finalists will also be rewarded with $450,000 each, and group stage teams finishing third or fourth will receive $300,000 and $200,000, depending on their group position.

With high financial stakes and national pride on the line, Coach Salisu Yusuf’s side will need a focused and clinical performance to overcome Sudan and revive their CHAN 2024 campaign.
