Remo Stars Hit with ₦8m Fine and Venue Relocation After Fan Violence

Remo Stars have been charged by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for multiple breaches of the league’s Framework and Rules following crowd disturbances during their Matchday 20 fixture against Ikorodu City on January 14, 2026, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

According to the NPFL, the league champions failed to provide adequate and effective security for the match, an oversight that led to a violent confrontation between supporters of both clubs. The incident resulted in injuries to away fans and damage to vehicles associated with Ikorodu City.

The league further cited Remo Stars for failing to control the conduct of their supporters, noting that match officials were subjected to harassment and intimidation. In addition, objects were thrown onto the pitch by home fans, causing several stoppages during the encounter.

The NPFL also condemned what it described as “barbaric behaviour” by some Remo Stars supporters, who were found to have brought dangerous objects and weapons into the stadium — an act deemed capable of bringing the game into disrepute.

As a result, the club has been handed a series of financial penalties. Remo Stars were fined ₦2 million for failing to provide adequate security and an additional ₦1 million for the throwing of objects onto the field of play. A further ₦1 million fine was imposed for the improper conduct of supporters, while another ₦1 million was levied for misconduct capable of bringing the league into disrepute.

The club has also been ordered to pay ₦2 million in compensatory costs to cover damages to the Ikorodu City team bus and injuries sustained by their supporters.

Beyond the financial sanctions, the NPFL has ruled that Remo Stars will play the remainder of their 2025/26 home fixtures at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, following the incident at their home ground in Ikenne.

Remo Stars have been given 48 hours from the date of notification to lodge an appeal against the sanctions.
