A Rivers United Football Club team bus was involved in a road traffic accident on Thursday morning while the squad was traveling to Awka, Anambra State, for a President Federation Cup Round of 16 clash against Nasarawa United, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The incident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt, shortly after the team departed from their camp.
According to a statement released by the club, several players and officials sustained minor injuries.
However, Rivers United confirmed there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.
All those affected are said to be in stable condition and are currently receiving medical attention.
“The safety, health, and well-being of our players and officials remain our utmost priority,” the club said.
“The club’s medical team is closely monitoring those involved, while management continues to assess the situation.”
Rivers United expressed gratitude to fans, partners, and the football community for their concern and prayers following the accident.
The club stated that further updates regarding the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup fixture against Nasarawa United will be provided in due course.
This is the latest in a series of road travel concerns for Nigerian football teams, as many clubs continue to rely on long-distance road journeys for domestic competitions.
