Senegal Seek World Cup Response After Federation and Bonus Row Settled

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has confirmed that administrative disputes involving his contract and players’ bonuses have been resolved, insisting the Teranga Lions are fully focused on their crucial FIFA World Cup Group I encounter against Norway, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The African champions enter their second group-stage match under pressure following a 3-1 defeat to France in their tournament opener at MetLife Stadium. However, preparations for the fixture have been overshadowed by reports of tensions within the camp over unpaid bonuses and contractual concerns involving members of the coaching staff.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s clash, Thiaw acknowledged that issues had existed between the team and the Senegal Football Federation but stressed that the situation had been settled.

“There have been some issues, but whether it is the players, the coaching staff or the federation, everyone is now focused on tomorrow’s match,” Thiaw told reporters. “The matter has finally been resolved.

“Yes, it took longer than it should have, but I want to make it clear that it was never about money. It was a matter of principle and respect.”

The Senegal coach declined to discuss the specifics of his agreement, describing the details of his contract as confidential.

Reports had suggested that despite leading Senegal to Africa Cup of Nations glory earlier this year, Thiaw had continued in his role without a renewed contract since February. Concerns over unpaid bonuses and logistical issues within the team camp also threatened to distract from Senegal’s World Cup campaign.

Efforts by the federation in recent days are understood to have addressed several of the concerns raised by players and staff, including issues relating to accommodation and welfare arrangements.

Despite the off-field distractions, Thiaw reiterated that representing Senegal remains his primary motivation.

“As Senegalese people, patriotism comes before everything,” he said. “Whenever I put on the tracksuit of my country, contractual matters disappear from my mind.

“There are administrative matters that need to be handled and perhaps they were resolved later than they should have been. But those matters remain internal. What matters most is our people and tomorrow’s match.”

Squad Emphasises Unity

Reserve goalkeeper Mory Diaw also sought to downplay reports of unrest within the camp, insisting the squad remains united ahead of a match that could prove decisive in Senegal’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages.

A second consecutive defeat would leave the Teranga Lions facing an uphill battle to progress, likely requiring victory over Iraq in their final group game and favourable results elsewhere.

“For us, the guiding principle is unity,” Diaw said. “Whether during the Africa Cup of Nations, World Cup qualifiers or previous campaigns, we have always stood together.

“The fact that Senegal is attracting media attention right now changes nothing. We have always been united and we will remain united.”

Diaw added that any disagreements within the camp had been handled internally and would not affect the players’ commitment on the pitch.

“We are professional players who know how to separate these matters from our responsibilities,” he said. “We are here to represent our country, and that remains our sole focus.

“No controversy or off-field issue will distract us from our shared objective.”

Following their meeting with Norway, Senegal will travel to Canada for their final Group I fixture against Iraq in Toronto, while Norway and France face each other simultaneously in Foxborough.

Senegal will be aiming to draw on their strong World Cup pedigree. The Teranga Lions have progressed beyond the group stage in two of their three previous appearances, reaching the quarter-finals in 2002 and the Round of 16 in Qatar before narrowly missing out on advancement in 2018 on fair-play criteria.
