Shaping Africa’s Sports-Law Future: AAU Triumphs At Inaugural Football Law Annual Moot Competition With N2.2M Prize Money

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, emerged champions of the maiden edition of the Football Law Annual Moot (FLAM), held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, in Abuja. The university’s law students impressed a distinguished panel of judges with their advocacy, legal reasoning, and the strength of evidence presented in support of their arguments, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

AAU received a dummy cheque of $1,500 equivalent of N2.2 million as the prize money.

The competition, which aims to develop the next generation of African sports-law experts, brought together top-tier law students who argued simulated football law disputes modeled after real-world cases from FIFA and the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

During the final session, participants, guests, and partners were welcomed to what organizers described as the culmination of weeks of rigorous preparation, extensive research, and strategic advocacy.

FLAM, according to organizers, was conceived to bridge the gap between the rapidly evolving global football industry and the growing pool of legal talent across Africa. The competition has already begun to position young African lawyers as future contributors to governance, dispute resolution, and regulatory frameworks within football.

In an address at the closing ceremony, organizers praised all participating teams and highlighted the importance of the initiative.

“What began as an idea to create a platform for young African lawyers to engage with real football-law challenges has grown into a movement shaping the future of sports law on the continent,” the address read. “This competition has proven that our young professionals are capable of handling high-level disputes and contributing meaningfully to the integrity and development of the game.”

They commended the finalists for their discipline, consistency, and skill, noting that every team remains a vital part of the FLAM community—a growing network designed to foster connections and open opportunities within the football industry.

Appreciation was also extended to the judges, moderators, sponsors, and partners for supporting a vision aimed at equipping Africa’s emerging legal minds with the tools to influence the sport’s future.

The event concluded with the final round of arguments, after which Adekunle Ajasin University was declared the overall winner of the inaugural edition.
