Shocker! South Africa Faces FIFA Ban Over SAFA Dispute

South Africa could face the risk of a FIFA ban as the ongoing dispute between Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie and the South African Football Association (SAFA) escalates, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The disagreement, which centres on issues involving the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, has now reached the attention of FIFA amid concerns over possible government interference in football administration.

McKenzie, however, has rejected suggestions that his decision to approach FIFA amounts to government interference, insisting that he is following the appropriate procedures and FIFA regulations.

“No, I'm going to FIFA... I'm not interfering as government,” McKenzie told journalists. “People like to say, don't interfere in SAFA. I'm not a stupid minister. I know the rules. I read the rules of FIFA.

“The rules of FIFA are very clear. That's why I'm going to FIFA. I'm not stopping... some countries have been banned.

“They just closed the doors of the federations. I don't operate like that. I'm a man that reads. I'm a man that follows the correct procedure.”

FIFA regulations generally require member associations to manage their affairs independently and without undue interference from government authorities.

The developing situation could therefore place South Africa's football administration under increased scrutiny, with FIFA expected to assess the dispute and determine whether any regulations have been breached.

A FIFA sanction, if imposed, could have serious consequences for South African football, potentially affecting the country's national teams and clubs in international competitions.
