Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali marked his return to competitive football with a standout performance, earning the Man of the Match award as Chippa United played out a goalless draw against Lamontville Golden Arrows in their opening fixture of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Making his first official appearance since January, the Nigerian international delivered a commanding display between the posts, producing six crucial saves to help the Chilli Boys secure a valuable point at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday.

Nwabali was at his best after the interval as Golden Arrows increased the pressure in search of a breakthrough. The 30-year-old twice denied Ronaldo Van Neel before producing an outstanding reflex save deep into stoppage time to keep out substitute Sabelo Sithole from close range.

Four of his six saves came from inside the penalty area, underlining his composure and sharp reactions as Chippa United weathered sustained attacking pressure from the hosts.

The clean sheet capped a memorable return for the Super Eagles goalkeeper, who rejoined Chippa United earlier this summer after spending five months away from competitive football.

Nwabali had mutually terminated his contract with the Eastern Cape club in February before returning ahead of the new campaign, ending months of uncertainty over his club future.

His impressive display provided an immediate boost for head coach Brandon Truter, whose side relied heavily on the goalkeeper's experience, leadership and shot-stopping ability to begin the season with a positive result away from home.

The draw sees both Chippa United and Golden Arrows open their Betway Premiership campaigns with a point, while Nwabali's encouraging performance will also be welcomed by Nigeria ahead of upcoming international assignments.

After months on the sidelines, the Super Eagles' first-choice goalkeeper showed he has lost none of the qualities that established him as one of the standout performers at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, delivering a composed and authoritative display to announce his return in style.
