South Africa Suffer Defeat In World Cup Opener Against Mexico

South Africa's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign got off to a disappointing start as Bafana Bafana fell to a 2-0 defeat against tournament co-hosts Mexico in their opening group-stage match, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Mexico made a bright start and took the lead in the ninth minute through Julián Quiñones, who capitalised on an opportunity to put El Tri ahead in front of their home fans.

The hosts maintained control of the encounter and secured all three points in the second half when veteran striker Raúl Jiménez found the net to double Mexico's advantage and put the game beyond South Africa's reach.

The match was also overshadowed by disciplinary incidents, with the referee issuing three red cards. 

South Africa finished the contest with nine men after Okon and captain Themba Zwane were both sent off, while Mexico defender César Montes was also dismissed.

The result leaves South Africa with an uphill task in their remaining group fixtures as they aim to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive. 

Mexico, meanwhile, made an impressive start to their World Cup campaign with a crucial opening victory.
