South Africa vs Nigeria Fallout: FIFA Reacts To Poor State Of Bloemfontein Pitch

Days after the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier between Bafana Bafana and Nigeria’s Super Eagles, FIFA has expressed concern over the poor condition of the Bloemfontein pitch, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Toyota Stadium turf had been the subject of debate even before kickoff, yet the match went ahead as planned.

The encounter ended 1-1, with Nigerian defender Ola Aina forced off early due to injury.

Speaking to UK-based journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, a FIFA official clarified that the responsibility for inspecting venues lies primarily with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and, where necessary, the national associations involved.

“We, as FIFA, do not have the capacity to inspect every stadium hosting World Cup qualifiers,” the official said.

“We rely on the confederations in this case, CAF to organise and oversee these games.

"If they fail to carry out their duties properly, as may have happened here, then the Nigeria Football Federation can submit a formal complaint for further review.”

FIFA’s response puts the spotlight on CAF’s role in ensuring that playing surfaces for World Cup qualifiers meet international standards.
