Super Eagles Star Breaks Silence on Mental Health Battle

Super Eagles star, Victor Boniface has opened up about his battle with depression following a challenging period marked by injuries, disrupted transfers, and off-field difficulties, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Nigeria national football team forward, who rose to prominence with Bayer Leverkusen, has seen his momentum stalled over the past year due to a series of setbacks that have affected both his career trajectory and mental well-being.
In a candid message shared on X, Boniface wrote, “Depression real die,” a brief but poignant statement highlighting the emotional strain he has endured.
His difficulties began in early 2024 when a groin injury required surgery, ruling him out of the Africa Cup of Nations. Later that year, he suffered a thigh injury while on international duty, prematurely ending his season.
The injury setbacks continued into 2026, with recurring knee problems forcing another surgery in January. The latest issue has kept him sidelined for much of the current campaign, disrupting his form and confidence.
Off the pitch, Boniface has also faced significant challenges. In October 2024, he survived a serious car accident just hours after scoring a decisive goal for Leverkusen. Although the vehicle was severely damaged, he escaped with only minor injuries.
Shortly before that incident, Boniface was part of the Nigerian squad involved in a widely reported ordeal in Libya, where players were stranded for over 15 hours at a remote airport without basic provisions. The experience led to the team boycotting an AFCON qualifier.
His career progression has also been impacted by unsuccessful transfer moves. A proposed switch to AC Milan collapsed in August 2025 after medical examinations raised concerns over his knee condition. Earlier, a potential move to Al-Nassr also failed to materialize.
A subsequent loan move to Werder Bremen offered an opportunity for a fresh start, but Boniface struggled to regain form, failing to score in his first 11 Bundesliga appearances before undergoing his most recent surgery. During this period, he also faced criticism regarding his physical fitness.
Despite the setbacks, Boniface’s openness has drawn attention to the mental health challenges faced by professional athletes, particularly during periods of injury and uncertainty. His experience underscores the importance of psychological support alongside physical recovery in modern football.
