Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has delivered a candid assessment of football in West Africa, criticising the standard of domestic leagues and highlighting the structural challenges driving players abroad.

In an interview with Brila FM, the Nigerian international said leagues in the region lag behind their counterparts in Morocco, South Africa and Europe, citing poor remuneration and limited professional opportunities as major concerns.

“In West Africa, our leagues are not good enough. We want to go to Europe, we want to go to South Africa, and we want to go to Morocco,” Nwabali said.

He attributed the growing exodus of talent primarily to financial instability, noting that many clubs are unable to guarantee salaries or offer secure professional contracts. According to him, improved organisation and financial structures would reduce the incentive for players to leave.

“Without stable salaries and sponsorship, players cannot rely on the system. If the league is good, salaries are guaranteed, and there are sponsors, why would a player leave?” he added.

Nwabali also pointed to deficiencies in infrastructure and overall management, arguing that disparities in facilities and administrative standards compared to more developed leagues make it difficult for players to remain in the region.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper recently became a free agent after parting ways with South Africa’s Chippa United in February, shortly after the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

He was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the tournament and featured prominently, including in the semi-final clash against Morocco, which was ultimately decided by penalties in favour of the North Africans.

Nwabali’s remarks come amid a sustained trend of West African players seeking opportunities overseas, underscoring ongoing concerns about the development and competitiveness of domestic football structures in the region.Headline options:
