Nigeria may have finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, but the Super Eagles’ statistical output from the tournament underlined a campaign defined by attacking authority and sustained control, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Eric Chelle’s side ended the competition as the highest-scoring team, registering 14 goals across the tournament. Their offensive productivity was matched by dominance in possession, with Nigeria recording an average of 66 per cent ball control — the highest figure at AFCON 2025.
The Super Eagles also produced the longest winning streak of the tournament, stringing together five consecutive victories at one stage. The run highlighted their ability to manage matches effectively and deliver consistent results under pressure.
Individually, Ademola Lookman emerged as one of the tournament’s standout performers. The Atalanta winger was named Best Playmaker of AFCON 2025 after providing four assists, recognition for his creativity, movement and influence in the final third.
Despite their impressive metrics, Nigeria ultimately settled for a third-place finish, ending the tournament behind hosts Morocco and eventual champions Senegal.
Defensive honours, however, were shared among several teams. According to figures published on the Confederation of African Football’s official website, Morocco, Senegal, DR Congo and Comoros finished the tournament with the best defensive records, each conceding just two goals.
Senegal went on to lift the AFCON trophy after edging Morocco 1–0 in the final, with Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal. While Morocco and Senegal progressed to the final, DR Congo were eliminated in the round of 16 by Algeria.
Comoros, meanwhile, exited the competition at the group stage after collecting two points from three matches in Group A.
