Team Nigeria Steps Up Commonwealth Games Preparations As Camp Grows To 74 Athletes

Team Nigeria has entered the final phase of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with the delegation establishing its training base at the Aberdeen Sports Village ahead of the competition, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

With 18 days remaining before the Games begin, the Nigerian contingent will spend the next three weeks training at the high-performance facility before relocating to the Games Village in Glasgow.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) said the Aberdeen Sports Village provides Team Nigeria with an ideal environment to fine-tune preparations and acclimatise ahead of the multi-sport event.

Director-General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, expressed confidence in the team's readiness, stressing the importance of providing athletes with world-class facilities during the final stages of preparation.

"With 18 days to the Games, our focus in this final preparation phase is ensuring every athlete has access to the best possible training environment," Olopade said.

"Aberdeen Sports Village offers facilities that meet the highest international standards, and we are confident our athletes will make the most of this final preparation period. We remain optimistic about Team Nigeria's prospects in Glasgow and wish every athlete an injury-free and successful campaign."

Widely regarded as one of Scotland's leading high-performance sports centres, Aberdeen Sports Village features an internationally accredited athletics track, a UK Athletics-certified indoor athletics centre, an Olympic-standard aquatics complex, a high-performance gymnasium, recovery facilities and multi-sport indoor arenas. The venue has previously hosted major international competitions and serves as a training base for elite athletes from around the world.

Meanwhile, Team Nigeria's training camp continues to expand as more athletes arrive in Scotland. According to the NSC, 18 additional athletes joined the camp on Saturday, increasing the total number of athletes in camp to 74. More athletes and officials are expected to arrive in the coming days as preparations gather momentum ahead of the Games.
