Team Nigeria Targets Success at Central African Wrestling Championship

Nigeria’s wrestling team has arrived in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, ahead of the 2026 Central African Wrestling Championship, which will feature Senior and Under-17 athletes competing in Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Women’s Wrestling events, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Nigerian delegation touched down in the Congolese capital on Sunday in preparation for the start of competition on Monday.

Representing Nigeria at the championship are Andrew Woyinkorikiye in the 53kg Women’s Wrestling category, Precillia Archbone in the 45kg Women’s Wrestling division, and Terry Godfrey in the 65kg Freestyle event.

The athletes will be accompanied by coach Kingkuro Oyinbrakemi Tangi and Abigail Ibrahim, Assistant Secretary of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF).

The championship is aimed at promoting the growth of wrestling across Central Africa, while providing a platform for talent development, regional integration, and cultural exchange among participating nations.

Nigeria’s participation reflects the Nigeria Wrestling Federation’s continued commitment to exposing athletes to top-level international competition. Under the leadership of NWF President Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, the federation has intensified efforts to provide wrestlers with opportunities to enhance their technical, tactical and physical development through regular participation in continental and global events.

The tournament follows Nigeria’s encouraging performance at the recent United World Wrestling (UWW) Ranking Series event in Mongolia, where Nigerian wrestlers secured one silver and two bronze medals in a campaign supported by the federation.

Since assuming office as President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Adeniyi, who also serves as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, has focused on consolidating the gains made by previous administrations while driving the sport’s growth nationwide.

His administration has prioritized increased participation in international competitions, alongside the organization of training camps, coaching clinics and educational workshops designed to strengthen the capacity of athletes, coaches and officials across Nigeria’s wrestling community.

With competition set to commence in Brazzaville, Team Nigeria will be aiming to build on its recent international successes and further establish the country's reputation as one of Africa’s leading wrestling nations.
