Nigeria’s women’s 4x400 metres relay team has secured qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Relays after an impressive performance at the MTN Champs track and field competition in Calabar, Cross River State, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The quartet of veteran runner Patience Okon-George and emerging talents Anita Enaruna, Treasure Okereke and Jecinter Lawrence clinched victory in the women’s 4x400m event on Sunday, clocking 3 minutes 31.14 seconds.

The result propelled Nigeria to 21st place in the global rankings, edging out Mexico to secure one of the qualifying spots for the prestigious relay competition.

The upcoming edition of the World Relays will mark a historic milestone as it will be staged in Africa for the first time, with Botswana set to host the championship in May.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s men’s 4x400m relay team narrowly missed out on qualification despite a strong showing in the same event.

The team comprising Emmanuel Ojeli, Gafar Badmus, Victor Sampson and Samson Nathaniel finished with a time of 3 minutes 04.59 seconds. However, they needed to run faster than 3 minutes 03.46 seconds to secure a place at the championship.

Despite the narrow miss, Nigeria’s women’s relay team will now look ahead to the World Relays with renewed confidence as they prepare to compete against some of the world’s top sprint squads.
