Concerns are mounting over the deteriorating health of former Nigerian international and veteran coach, Lawrence Akpokona, who is currently receiving treatment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Akpokona, a former player of Bendel Insurance, has been bedridden since October 13, 2025, following a severe spinal cord injury that has significantly impacted his mobility and overall health.

According to close associates and family sources, the veteran coach has undergone three major surgical procedures since his admission, with ongoing medical care placing considerable financial strain on those supporting his treatment.

Appeal for Intervention

In light of his condition, stakeholders within the football community have issued a strong appeal to relevant authorities, including the Edo State Government, Delta State Government, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the National Sports Commission (NSC), to urgently intervene and provide the necessary medical and financial assistance.

The call underscores Akpokona’s contributions to Nigerian football, both as a player and as a coach, with many insisting that his service to the sport warrants institutional support in his time of need.
