Tunisia Suffer Heavy Defeat To Sweden As Cote D'ivoire Pick Africa 1st Victory

Côte d'Ivoire delivered Africa's first victory at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 1-0 win over Ecuador, while fellow African side Tunisia endured a difficult evening, falling 5-1 to Sweden, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

The Elephants of Côte d'Ivoire produced a resilient performance and were rewarded late in the contest when Ahmad Diallo struck the decisive goal in the 89th minute. 

The late winner sparked jubilant celebrations among the Ivorian contingent and secured three vital points in Group stage proceedings.

Côte d'Ivoire's victory marks a significant milestone for African teams at this tournament, providing a much-needed boost after what has been a challenging start for the continent's representatives.

In contrast, Tunisia's Carthage Eagles were unable to contain a clinical Swedish attack. Sweden took full control of the match, with forward Ayari netting a brace. 

Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres, and Mattias Svanberg also found the net to complete the rout.

Tunisia managed a consolation goal through Rekik, but it proved little more than a footnote as Sweden ran out comfortable 5-1 winners.

The results leave Côte d'Ivoire with renewed hope of progressing from the group stage, while Tunisia face an uphill battle to recover from the heavy loss and keep their knockout stage dreams alive.
