Unstoppable Super Falcons Soar Into WAFCON Semis As House Committee On Sports Predict Title Glory

The House of Representatives Committee on Sports has lauded the Super Falcons following their emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia in the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), securing a spot in the semifinals for a record 13th time.

The Falcons displayed clinical dominance at the Stade Moulay Hassan, netting three goals in the first half through Osinachi Ohale, Esther Okoronkwo, and Chinwendu Ihezuo to put the game out of Zambia’s reach early. The Nigerian side maintained control in the second half, with Tosin Demehin adding a fourth in the 68th minute before substitute Folashade Ijamilusi rounded off the rout with a stoppage-time goal in the 91st minute.

Reacting to the performance, Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, Honourable Kabiru Amadu, expressed his delight and confidence in the team’s pursuit of their tenth continental title.

“Securing a semifinal spot without conceding a single goal, while scoring nine so far, speaks volumes about the quality of this team. We are just two wins away from reclaiming the title we last won in 2018,” said the lawmaker, who represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency.

He further assured the team of widespread support from all corners of the country.

“The Federal Government, the National Assembly, the National Sports Commission, the Nigeria Football Federation, and indeed the entire 230 million Nigerians stand firmly behind the Super Falcons. We believe in their ability to restore Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football,” he added.

The Falcons will now face the winner of the quarterfinal clash between defending champions South Africa and Senegal, scheduled for Saturday.
